Day 4 RPI
Day 4
The day was a little frustrating as my device wouldn’t allow the camera or mic, but it certainly did give me the chance to reflect on how kids must feel (particularly now that I am teaching Year 4’s and 5’s who are just learning how to use chrome books!)
The day went really quickly with lots of learning. There was lots of reiterating of what I already knew but this was really good as just because I know it, doesn’t actually mean that it is always what I do!!
One thing that I really haven’t done in my practice and really liked and think I need to be inclusive of is the prior knowledge through the use of videos etc. I really enjoyed seeing the clip about how this was beneficial and although I usually try to select texts that the children have some familiarity with, this is another way to ensure I am exposing them to things that they are not familiar with as well as this allowing me to access a lot more texts.
I don’t always record observations (in any sort of way that I can easily access later on) so the discussion and reminder about this was really valuable. I also thought the discussion around questioning during guided reading was useful - although this is something that I believe I do well, it is super helpful to be reminded about the range of questions that we should be asking and making sure that I am actually doing this rather than just sticking to the same types of questioning. Planning the actual questions is also super important and the reminder of this was great. I always ensure a follow up activity is planned for in order to consolidate learnings and a chance to respond to the text but I need to ensure that this actually happens as I team teach and sometimes this can be overlooked. The graphic organisers are a great resource to use during lessons and then for the children to use to support the follow up activity.
I am really excited about the word work day coming up as this is something that I feel would be really beneficial to both my practice and my students' learning.

ReplyDeleteI can only imagine how frustrating your day was with your camera and mic not working! Regardless, it looks like you took a lot away from the day.
I really like your point about sharing some background knowledge/activating prior knowledge with your learners before a Guided Reading session. It means that we can provide a wide variety of topics and texts for our students and it also means that they come to the session ready to go! And we all know, time is always slipping away on us, so being able to use their independent time well, makes good sense!
Look forward to seeing you Friday - hopefully your camera behaves!!! :)

Kia ora e hoa, it looks like you are learning so much through this PD, I know that we have spoken about this learning in class, but i just wanted it noted on your blog. I understand the frustration and it can really ruin the good intentions we have with our teaching. No worries always another day ahe!!
