Day 6 - RPI

I have found today to be one of the most beneficial days of this programme!  All the other days have been awesome but for some reason, today really resonated with me?  I am wondering if this is due to me not feeling like I am doing a great job of word work in my classroom or not deliberately planning for this, like I do for the other areas we have covered.  This is certainly an area of improvement for me!  Like it has been reiterated today, we can not assume that our learners know words or will simply learn this by osmosis and this teaching needs to be planned and explicit.  The apps and resources we have been supplied with today make this an exciting challenge, one of which I am certain my kids will just love!

Anna was able to share a couple of great apps with us which lead to others in our breakout also sharing.  This collaborative learning is so awesome given that we are so busy, it's great to have someone recommend particular resources that work.  Am really looking forward to having a play now.  Wordwall that Dorothy also informed us about sounds exciting too and again, looking forward to looking into that.  It will be really exciting, engaging and beneficial for my learners.

I have copied the slide below as I feel that this will aid me in keeping focused in teaching robust vocabulary instructions and I want to ensure that I refer back to this in the future.

  • The direct explanation one is one that I definitely need to follow as the example given, where we get the learners to share their thinking (which when wrong, just diverts from the lesson) is a tactic I often employ!  think we are so taught to let our students discover that direct explanation can sometimes be seen as ‘bad’ practice!

Survival words, rather than topic related words was another term I liked hearing about.  Often I identify vocab that are in fact topic related but this is not enough as there will often be others (that are not topic related) that they need to know in order to access the text.  This is something that I also want to keep reminding myself about!

From here on in, I am excited to share today’s session with my co-teacher as well as the other teacher in our school at the same level as myself.  I am also fortunate enough to be attending a Liz Kane day in July looking at ‘The Code’ so with this information today and the course coming up, I feel it will be at the forefront of my teaching and planning. I currently do not have a specific time set aside for word work as it is loosely integrated into my reading/writing programme but now want to make this a stand alone subject as well as integrated.  When I say, ‘stand alone’, it will fit with our inquiry and learning in the classroom but its more about there being a set time for this learning to occur. I do not know yet what this is going to look like in Term 3 but intend to do some testing over the next couple of weeks, using the code assessment, to gather the data I need in order to plan for this.

    • What did I learn that increased my understanding of the kaupapa and pedagogy of the Manaiakalani Reading Programme ?

    • What did I learn that could improve my capability and confidence in teaching reading?

    • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

    • What did I learn that could be shared within my wider community, with either colleagues, or whānau/aiga?

I know! It is so great to be able to share resources with each other and make our workloads more manageable. This is one of the great things about The Manaiakalani Network!
Yes, I have always enjoyed this day and I always take something new away from it, even though I have listened to it a few times now. I think you make a really good point - we cannot assume that out learners know the correct meaning of words. I love the pre-reading spot light activity and it is something that I will use next term.
    Have a lovely break,
    Anna

  2. Tena koe Cindy, that is so great to hear that you have found the session really beneficial and you can see the benefits of what you have been looking at reflected in the class. I can't wait to hear how the Liz Kane PD goes for you and what you want to implement in class along side the RPI learning you are doing. Nga mihi e hoa. kaiya
