Day 3 RPI
I have learnt a lot today in regards to the entire reading programme and some new resources to access reading material for my learners. It was great to have my teaching practice both affirmed and challenged with some great ideas about how to be inclusive of new resources within a well resourced/well rounded reading programme.
I did feel really frustrated however as when I struggled to find reading material that was appropriate for the group I had hoped to ‘target’ in today’s RPI. They are readers of approx 7-7.5 years and there didn’t seem to be a lot available. I found the journal surf offered a huge range for more able readers and I found it difficult to negotiate the TKI website. I did persevere with this after our day had finished and managed to find some appropriate leveled books. Although we had hoped to find ‘sets’, I managed to find 3 texts which could ‘loosely’ be grouped based on experiencing emotions and how different experiences make us feel. This is an area that will benefit my learners (developing insight into how others feel) although it would probably not have been my chosen theme had I had more choice. I did feel however, it was best to select appropriately leveled texts over choosing ‘topics’.
I had lots of practices reiterated throughout the day that as busy practitioners can be forgotten. It is really important that I make the most of my learners' independence and technology to have them recording their own reading. I have already emailed our Hapara admin to add a media file to our class files!!
It was also great to hear others struggling with the task board in regards to the tech side of it and be reassured that it is worth persevering with!! I am looking forward to having the holidays to reflect and read through the information in order to become more confident and share this with my mentor.
Mixed ability grouping as part of a ‘flexible’ response to targeted, guided instruction (e.g. clinics) or for specific purposes (e.g. shared reading, literature circles, independent work in supportive mixed ability groups).
Levelled grouping within a regular guided reading programme, alongside active steps to counteract known challenges of low-ability grouping, such as less emphasis on meaning, less opportunities for critical, higher order thinking and discussion. Needs to involve responsive teaching so that leaders are grouped and regrouped as they progress.

ReplyDeleteThanks for posting your blog reflection on Day 3. I'm glad to see that you found some texts for your readers - I know how frustrating it can be when you cannot find what you want! If you are reading non-fiction text, Kids National Geographic or Kids Britannica can be quite useful sites.
Wishing you an enjoyable holiday and I hope that you can find some time to relax!
Ngā mihi,

Kia ora Cindy,
ReplyDeleteIt is great to hear you are enjoying the RPI and it is not only affirming your current practice but also challenging you to change some of your practice. There are lots of great ideas and resources shared and it does take time to go through them and see which are suited to your class and school culture. Thanks for sharing on your blog. Have a good holiday!
Donna
You are such a reflective teacher. I understand your frustrations with having text available that are relevant and of interest. I know that this is a goal for the school as well so hopefully this improves over time.
